At Oxford Animal Hospital, we feel it is our job to provide education and promote the health and well-being of your pets. Outbreaks of the Canine flu have been devastating in other areas of the United States and we want to prevent that from happening in our community. We value your trust in us and want you to understand the reasons behind our vaccine policy. We will require the bivalent flu vaccine for boarding, grooming and daycare dogs starting January 1, 2018. It is recommended that all dogs receive the vaccine as all are susceptible. Our doctors and trained technicians are available if you still have questions.

Flu Facts:

  • Emerging virus that can cause more serious disease than other causes of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease.
  • Highly contagious.
  • All dogs are susceptible with infection rates of up to 80%.
  • No natural immunity.
  • Mortality (death) rate of up to 10%.
  • Veterinarians have confirmed cases of the canine flu in 46 states with our closest confirmed case in St. Joseph, MO.
  • Transmitted by aerosols generated by coughing and sneezing as well as direct contact; and by contaminated objects such as surfaces, clothes, and bowls.
  • Dogs can encounter infected dogs anywhere dogs gather such as pet retailers, dog parks, groomers, day cares, boarding facilities and even on walks or touching noses with the neighbor dog.
  • Best option to protect your pet is prevention by immunization.
  • Dogs develop symptoms within 3-5 days of exposure, but will already be shedding the virus prior to showing signs of disease.
  • Unlike bacterial causes of disease, this can not be cured with medications.
  • There are two main strains of virus that affect our canine friends. Unlike the human flu the strains of canine flu have remained static, or unchanging, for years which allows the vaccine to be very effective.
